Dr. Wright was interviewed on the Providence Health Talk. Here is a summary of what he had to say about Sports Medicine and how it can help to keep people participating in their desired activities pain-free. With so many people who like to work hard and play hard in this region sports medicine is an important resource.
Dr. Michael Wright, Orthopedic Surgeon, says “Sports medicine is not just for the elite athlete with joint pain, it is really for anyone who has joint pain which has not progressed to disease or arthritis in the joint. Some of the most frustrated patients I see are the ones that feel like there is no hope and no options, so if you are experiencing pain in one of your joints I encourage you to get evaluated because there is most often some sort of treatment modality that can help.”
Dr. Wright and his Missoula Bone & Joint Sports Medicine colleagues include non-operative management such as injections, physical therapy and other medical therapies, in an effort to try to avoid surgery. If these treatments are unsuccessful and the patient is still having symptoms then surgery is discussed with the patient. Sometimes after an initial evaluation it is clear that a surgical solution would be the best option.
The most common types of sports medicine surgeries are ACL reconstruction, knee meniscus repair and shoulder rotator cuff repairs. Dr. Wright also specializes in hip arthroscopy including labrum repair of the hip.
Dr. Wright says “orthopedic procedures can change a patient’s life. Surgery can take someone who is unable to walk, or move, back to a state of being able to move again pain free.”
A patient recently wrote this review “Dr. Wright is a great Dr./surgeon. He explained everything to me, gave all my options, and let me ultimately decide what course would be best for me and my health. At my follow up appointment after surgery he was there to answer all my questions and explained everything in a way I could understand. Dr. Wright is a nice, caring doctor and would highly recommend him. Thanks Dr. Wright!!” July 16, 2019
It is nice to have options, and Sports Medicine does just that – it gives people options! So, if you have a desire to continue playing tennis, pickleball or golf, or you want to hike in Glacier National Park or the Bob Marshall Wilderness, or you want to ski this winter season, don’t let joint pain get in your way.
