How can Sports Medicine help you?

At Missoula Bone & Joint, our team of sports medicine doctors treat all levels and ages of athletes: fitness enthusiasts and weekend warriors; youth athletes participating in school sports; amateur or professional athletes competing in team or individual sports. However, sports medicine is not just for the elite athlete with an injury, it is for anyone who has joint pain or an injury, which has not yet progressed to disease or arthritis in the joint.

Anyone who is physically active is inevitably subject to a sports-related injury. Injuries can be the result of an accident, overuse, poor mechanics, faulty or inadequate equipment, or simply bad luck. In any case, it’s never fun to be sidelined from doing what you love. Some of the most frustrated patients are the ones that feel like there is no hope and options, so if you are experiencing pain in one of your joints, we encourage you to get evaluated because there is most often some sort of treatment modality that can help.

Our goal is to get you back to your game as quickly and safely as possible, returning you to your previous level of play – or better. Our sports medicine specialists have many years of experience diagnosing and treating a wide range of sports-related injuries from head to toe.

Some of the most common injuries include:

  • ACL tears
  • PCL tears
  • Meniscal tears
  • Cartilage tears
  • Sprains and strains
  • Overuse injuries / tendonitis
  • Concussions
  • Achilles Tendon Rupture
  • Ankle sprain and instability
  • Shoulder instability / dislocation
  • Shoulder Impingement
  • Frozen shoulder
  • Rotator cuff tear
  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfer’s elbow
  • Pitcher’s elbow
  • Shin splints
  • Iliotibial band syndrome
  • Patellar tendon tear
  • Patellofemoral (kneecap) pain
  • Hamstring muscle injuries
  • Arthroscopy of the hip, knee, or shoulder
  • Labrum tear of the shoulder or hip

Not only will we help you recover from an athletic injury, but also teach you how to prevent the injury from happening again. Injury prevention includes:

  • Educating you about why and how your injury occurred
  • Understanding body mechanics
  • Sport-specific tips for strength training, conditioning, and proper technique

Overuse and fatigue are some of the most common reasons for sports-related injuries. Continuing physical activity when your body is weak or in pain is never smart, and “pushing through it” can only lead to injury and a longer time off for recovery than proactively taking time to rest and recharge your body.

In addition, our sports medicine program features:

Primary Care Sports Medicine

Approximately 90 percent of all sports injuries are nonsurgical in nature. At MBJ, Dr. Rob Amrine offers primary care for athletes. Following his family medicine residency, he completed a sports medicine fellowship, qualifying him to diagnose and treat any type of nonsurgical sports injury, such as ankle sprains, joint injuries, dislocations, minor fractures, overuse injuries, osteoarthritis, and concussions.

Dr. Amrine helps athletes manage medical problems and acute illnesses, guides in return-to-activity decisions for injured or ill athletes, performs pre-participation sports physicals, gives advice regarding nutrition and supplements, and more. He works closely with our orthopedic surgeons to coordinate care in the event that surgery becomes necessary.

In addition, Dr. Amrine specializes in caring for endurance athletes such as runners, cyclists, and swimmers. He treats common overuse injuries that affect endurance athletes (e.g., shin splints, stress fractures, rotator cuff tendonitis, anterior knee pain, sacroiliac joint dysfunction, iliotibial band friction syndrome, Achilles tendonitis, plantar fasciitis) and helps them correct their technique, improve biomechanics, prevent injuries, and enhance nutrition.

For your convenience, MBJ offers orthopedic services to help you recover and rehabilitate any sports injury, including on-site physical therapy, diagnostic imaging, casting and durable medical equipment, and an outpatient surgery center for necessary surgical procedures.
