Orthopedic Surgery Center in Missoula, Montana

Compassionate Care. Start-of-the-art Facility. Surgical Excellence.

quality care at our orthopedic surgery center

Missoula Bone & Joint's 2-story, 31,949 square foot orthopedic surgery center is located on Mullan Road in Missoula, Montana.  It is equipped with four state of the art operating suites, 15 pre-and-post operative rooms, and 6 private patient recovery rooms. We have combined the latest in technology with our team of experienced surgeons, to provide the opportunity for our patients to receive quality surgical care in an outpatient setting.

Outpatient Same Day Surgery Is The Gold Standard of Care

Missoula Bone & Joint’s Ambulatory Surgery Center is achieving the National Gold Standard of Care by implementing superior patient care that enables patients to go home the same day as their joint replacement surgery. Our goal is to have patients comfortable after surgery and then discharged later the same day to continue recovering in the comfort of their own home. Our outpatient surgery experience is patient-focused and designed for people who are motivated to recover quickly. Safety, comfort, and high quality successful outcomes continue to be our top priority. Wouldn't you prefer to recover in the comfort and safety of your own home? To learn more about why patients can go home soon after surgery read our blog.

Our surgeons continue to specialize in orthopedic, plastic, and reconstructive outpatient surgeries that we have done for years. This new facility allows us to provide outpatient total joint replacement surgery and spine procedures in an outpatient center.

Not all patients will qualify for outpatient surgery, therefore the Missoula Bone &  Joint physician group will continue to provide surgery in the hospital setting as well. You will have an opportunity to discuss with your surgeon if 'home the same day of surgery' is right for you.

Advanced Pain Management Techniques in our Orthopedic Surgery Center

Missoula Bone & Joint is leading the path for surgical excellence in Montana. This new facility opened in January 2020 and is designed to provide a comfortable, safe, efficient, and cost effective surgical experience. Although this model is new to Missoula it is a well-established model for surgical success in the USA.

The difference with this surgeon owned outpatient surgery center is that each surgeon follows their own streamlined surgical process, with advanced technologies, and highly skilled support staff. The key to quick recovery time is the use of minimally invasive, muscle-sparing techniques, and the advancement in anesthesia and pain management techniques.

Our surgeons have collaborated with a team of anesthesiologists to provide advanced and superior surgical pain management techniques for outpatient surgery. The surgical team (surgeon, anesthesiologist, surgical technicians, nurses and surgical staff) work together to prepare and tailor every anesthesia and pain management plan for each surgical patient.

We provide all patients with multimodal analgesia, which means providing better surgical pain relief by combining multiple methods of pain relieving interventions. Nerve blocks, steroids, oral pain medications, local anesthetic injections and anti-inflammatory medications are all examples of the different methods we can use. The end result for the patient is better pain control, early patient mobilization after surgery, less opioid/narcotic consumption, less negative side-effects and an overall better patient outcome and experience.

Home same day after joint replacement surgeryRecovery at Home the Same Day as Surgery

Healing at home is an integral part of your surgical process. Studies have shown that patients who go home directly after their surgery:

  • Have improved wellness
  • Have a faster recovery
  • Reach their goals earlier
  • Have less infection

Why Heal at Home?

  • You are a healthy, well person who needs surgery.
  • You will recover faster at home.
  • You will have less chance of getting an infection.
  • You will have less chance of developing surgical complications.
  • You will sleep better.
  • You will have normal social interactions with friends and family.
  • You will be able to follow your own schedule.
  • You will be active in your familiar environment.

orthopedic surgery center in Missoula MontanaOvernight Stay in a Private Recovery Suite

If needed, Missoula Bone & Joint offers the option of an overnight stay in one of six private recovery suites. Your surgeon will discuss with you the best option for your post operative recovery so you will know what to expect before the day of your surgery. For most procedures you will not require an overnight stay and will receive your post operative care in one of our post-op recovery rooms.

Especially during these times, we are proud to offer extended care and comfort in a private suite, if needed:

  • six private suites with full bathroom
  • overnight stay for one guest in your private room
  • attentive nursing care
  • physical therapy on-site
  • pre-surgery education class for you and your care giver

Outpatient joint replacement surgery centerTotal Joint Replacement Surgery at Missoula Bone & Joint - knee, hip, shoulder, ankle

Joint replacement surgery is truly a life-changing experience for most patients. After a relatively short period of time, the patient is able to re-engage in the active lifestyle that's so important to them. But most important is for the patient to finally feel relief from the chronic pain they have been experiencing. Our patients can take comfort in the fact that "joint replacement surgery is one of the greatest success stories in the history of medicine" Med J Armed Forces India. 2015 Jan; 71(1): 5-10.

In February 2022 Missoula Bone & Joint ASC celebrated 1000 joint replacement surgeries at our new facility which opened in January 2020.

Pre-Surgery Joint Replacement Patient and Coach Education Class

The best way for you, the patient, and your coach (the person who is going to take care of you at home the first week after surgery) to learn about what to expect and how best be prepared after the surgery, is to attend an in-person class at Missoula Bone & Joint Surgery Center. We offer classes most days. If you cannot attend in-person please take the time to watch the videos on our patient resource total joint surgery page.

Spine Surgery in an Outpatient Surgery Center

Many spinal conditions respond well to surgical treatment. In properly selected patients, surgery provides relief of symptoms, returns function, halts neurological damage, and achieves or restores spinal stability. Traditionally, spine surgery is performed as open surgery which entails opening the operative site with a long incision so the surgeon can view and access the spinal anatomy. However, technology has advanced to the point where more spine conditions can be treated with minimally invasive techniques. This means that there is less disruption to the soft tissue surrounding the spine, leading to shorter operative time, less postoperative pain, and a faster recovery. Spine surgery is now an option in our outpatient setting.  You will appreciate extended care in a private suite if you require an overnight stay, but most spine surgeries will allow you to return home the same day.

What are the Benefits:

Missoula Bone & Joint Surgery Center is certified by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC), and a member of the Montana Ambulatory Surgery Center Association www.ascassociation.org

Outpatient surgery at an ambulatory surgery center (ASC) is beneficial to both the surgeon and patient.  It is designed to facilitate an efficient and cost effective flow that centers around patient care, and the surgeon is able to work with his hand-picked team of specialists. The smaller environment creates a “family atmosphere” that is pleasant for both staff and the patient.

Our goal is to be the leader in outpatient surgical excellence for Missoula and the surrounding area through our commitment to service, care, compassion, and patient satisfaction. We adhere to a high standard of care in safe surgical practices, advanced techniques, and extremely low infection rates. It’s easy to see why many patients choose Missoula Bone & Joint Surgery Center for their orthopedic surgical care.
