This state-of-the-art equipment provides the highest level of image quality and allows us to work quickly and accurately to minimize your wait time. Our highly skilled Radiologic Technologists specialize in orthopedic x-rays, focusing on using appropriate techniques and positioning to fully visualize the affected anatomy.

Preparing for your X-ray: Although we have a changing room and shorts/tank tops to use if needed, you can also plan to wear your own clothing without metal in the region of interest to your appointment.

Receiving a Copy of your Imaging:

If you would like a copy of your imaging, please contact the X-ray Department directly at (406) 721-0327 or send us a message through the Klara chat.  If you need a copy of the provider's notes/interpretation of the imaging, please contact Medical Records at (406) 532-8060 or send them a message through Klara chat.

MRI

Our mission is to provide professional MRI services with compassionate clinical care and excellence.

Missoula Bone & Joint has a full-body 1.5 Tesla MR scanner from GE. This high-performance system is located just down the hall from the exam rooms, making this a convenient part of your care.

The GE Signa Explorer features a short tunnel that is open on both ends, providing greater comfort and versatility during imaging. MRI is a painless procedure that requires patients to remain still while images are being taken, typically lasting 15–30 minutes depending on the type of exam performed. The technologist will use all available comfort measures and work efficiently to complete the scan as quickly as possible while minimizing any discomfort.

The GE Signa Explorer is also equipped with the NeoCoil Music System. You will be able to choose your own music genre from Pandora. Your technologist will supply disposable earplugs for all spine imaging.

MRI Process:

  1. There is no special restriction on diet or activity prior to an MRI procedure.
  2. You will be asked to remove any clothing, jewelry, watches, eyeglasses, hearing aids, hairpins, removable dental work, or other objects that may interfere with the magnet.
  3. You may wear your own metal-free clothing. If needed, you will be provided with shorts and a tank top or a gown.
  4. If your provider orders an MRI with contrast, the technologist will start an intravenous (IV) line. It is important to hydrate 24 hours before your appointment and increase fluid intake for 24 hours afterward to help flush the contrast from your body.
  5. You will lie on a scan table that slides into the large circular opening of the MRI machine. Most lower extremity exams are performed feet-first, while spine and upper extremity exams are typically performed head-first. Pillows and straps may be used to help you remain still and comfortable during the procedure.
  6. You will be given earplugs or a headset to reduce the loud noises produced by the scanner.
  7. It is very important to remain as still as possible during the exam, as movement can affect the quality of the images.
  8. Plan to be in the MRI scanner for at least 15 minutes. Some exams may take longer.
  9. The technologist will be in a separate room operating the scanner but will be able to see you at all times. You will be able to communicate through a speaker system and will be given a call button to alert the technologist if you need assistance.
  10. During the scan, you will hear loud clicking or knocking sounds as the magnetic field is activated and radio waves are transmitted.
  11. Once the scan has been completed, the table will slide out of the scanner and you will be assisted off the table.

Your MRI results are read and diagnosed by both a contracted radiologist and your orthopedic surgeon. MRI results are usually available within two to three business days. At the time of your scan we will tell you how you will receive your results.

As a facility accredited by the Intersocietal Commission for the Accreditation of Magnetic Resonance Laboratories (IACMRI), MBJ MR Imaging holds the same commitment to compassion, skill, and knowledge that makes Missoula Bone & Joint a preferred orthopedic practice in the Missoula area.

Providing quality patient care is not only a priority at Missoula Bone & Joint, it is part of our mission as an orthopedic group. All diagnostic imaging performed at Missoula Bone & Joint MR Imaging allows the highest quality MRIs to be completed in a familiar and welcoming environment.

MRI Forms

First and foremost, we need to ensure you are safe to enter the magnetic field. Here is a copy of our metal screening form and patient history form. MRI Patient Hx and Contrast Metal Screening Form

If your procedure involves the use of contrast dye, you will be asked to sign a consent form. Unlike CT contrast, MRI contrast is non-iodinated. Read the form carefully and ask questions if something is not clear. Hydrate prior to and after your scan for 24 hours. Contrast Information

The Federal Government (Patient Protection and Affordable Healthcare Act, Sections 6409 and 6003 dated March 23, 2010) mandates we provide information on facilities other than those owned by our physicians. You have the right to choose your facility. If you would like to receive services at another facility we will be happy to provide you with a referral. Durable Medical Equipment (DME)

Knee Brace

Durable medical equipment (DME) means any boots, slings, or braces used to immobilize a joint (prevent it from moving) or provide functional support while the joint is moving. We have DME for every body part, from the toes to the neck.

We stock all products ordered by our providers for our patients. Having these products on site is not only convenient from an access standpoint, but you also learn how to fit and care for your DME as well. Our DME coordinator is a Certified Fitter of Orthotics (CFO) and is trained on how to properly fit you for any DME product that your MBJ physician may prescribe.

We specialize in functional ACL and osteoarthritis bracing. We will meet with you, discuss the brace you will need, take measurements, preauthorize the brace with insurance, fit the brace, and schedule a follow-up check to make sure you get the best fit and function from your brace.

Now available at Missoula Bone & Joint are the knee Rollabout scooters complete with basket and bell. Ideal for patients with foot or ankle injuries that require non-weight bearing for a period of time. We also have crutches and walkers available.
