Occupational Therapy - Hand Therapy

Comprehensive Care for the Upper Extremity

Hand therapy is a specialized branch of orthopedics dedicated to restoring function and reducing pain in the hand and upper extremity. Whether you’re recovering from an injury or managing a chronic condition, hand therapy aims to help you regain mobility and strength to return to the activities you love.

What is Hand Therapy?

Hand therapy encompasses the treatment of the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder, focusing on restoring as much function as possible based on each patient’s unique condition. This specialized care is provided by occupational therapists with advanced training and experience in treating upper extremity conditions. An added qualification as a Certified Hand Therapist (CHT) means they have accumulated at least 2,000 hours of clinical experience in hand and upper extremity therapy, and passed a rigorous certification exam to earn their designation as a Board Certified CHT.

Conditions Treated by Hand Therapists

CHTs manage a broad range of orthopedic and traumatic injuries, as well as chronic conditions, including:

  • Traumatic Injuries: Fractures, tendon and nerve repairs, joint replacement, and amputations.
  • Post-Operative Care: Custom orthosis (splint) fabrication to stabilize and protect during healing.
  • Chronic Conditions: Carpal tunnel syndrome, tendonitis, arthritis, sprains, and joint instability.

Your Hand Therapy Experience

If you require the services of a CHT, your journey often begins with a referral from a physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner. Your initial visit will include a comprehensive evaluation, where your therapist will:

  • Conduct a one-on-one interview to understand your condition and goals.
  • Measure movement, strength, swelling, and sensory responses.
  • Develop a customized treatment plan tailored to your needs.

During your first session, you’ll also receive a personalized home exercise program designed to:

  • Improve range of motion and strength.
  • Reduce swelling and manage scar tissue.
  • Alleviate pain.

Hand therapy is a collaborative process, combining expert guidance with patient engagement. Your therapist will work closely with you to discuss your daily activities, hand use, concerns, and progress. Open communication with your referring physician ensures comprehensive and coordinated care.
