A pain management specialist is a physician with special medical training in the evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of all different types of pain. Pain is a wide spectrum of disorders including acute pain, and chronic pain, and sometimes a combination of these. Pain management helps a patient alleviate or manage their chronic pain without surgery, using specialized interventional techniques, including injections.
Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, PM&R, offers a comprehensive rehabilitation program specifically designed for each individual depending on the injury, disorder, or illness. The goal of rehabilitation and treatment is to restore impaired individuals to healthy, independent lives. It is a holistic approach with the patient’s needs at the center of the treatment plan. PM&R physicians manage nonsurgical conditions including orthopedic injuries, spine-related pain and dysfunction, occupational injuries and overuse syndromes, neurogenic bowel/bladder, pressure sore management, spasticity management, and chronic pain.
Dr. Kegan Cunniff is a board-certified, fellowship-trained physiatrist with a sub-specialization in nonoperative interventional spine and musculoskeletal medicine. Dr. Cunniff is passionate about working with patients to reduce pain and maintain their physical functioning through a combination of fluoroscopic and ultrasound-guided interventions, physical therapy, non-opioid medications, and variety of physical modalities. His main area of focus is the non-surgical management of neck, back, and peripheral joint pain. He also performs electrodiagnostic studies to help identify and localize a variety of peripheral nerve injuries.
A native Montanan, Dr. Cunniff was raised on his family’s apiary in Choteau, MT. His young years were spent enjoying the eastern front of the Rockies and working the family trade as a commercial beekeeper alongside his father and brother. These early years in agricultural work revealed to Dr. Cunniff at a young age the prevalence of chronic pain conditions affecting hard-working Montanans, and how the demands of running a farm or ranch can limit time for surgeries and long recovery periods. As such, Dr. Cunniff made it his mission to help people treat and manage their pain without surgery.
